Pickles in bulk are delicious, as long as you rinse with Listerine afterwards, you should be ok.
My secret shame is that I love boxed wine, do they sell it at Walmart ? Much as I may get teased, anything that tastes like apple juice infused with alcohol, is fine with me. To show I have some class, the line is drawn at wine coolers, although they’re probably good, one must keep up appearances somehow.

    • *Snort* Too funny, Sophie. I go with the cheap bottled Sangria, myself. Nothing like cold, sweet, deep red wine.

About the image: My daughter is turning into somewhat of a conservative and it has nothing to do with my influence on her. It’s about what she’s seeing in the Walmart check out line, where she works as a cashier. She called me last night on her break to fume about a particular lady who comes in every week or two and always picks her line. She lines up the belt with a collection of items, then makes my daughter do a price fix on about 3/4 of them based on ads from other stores. Then she whips out her EBT card to pay for it on foodstamps. But it’s not just her, it’s also the folks talking on their iPhones while they’re buying ribeye steaks and loads of soda with food stamps, too.

“Wine” coolers are apple juice infused with alcohol.

Lola, real world experience has a strange effect on the young, doesn’t it ? Of course, my beloved Janis saw today’s culture long before it happened, as illustrated here:

“in 1688, Lord Percy paid ten shillings to take a family party to watch the inmates of. Bedlam perform their unrehearsed antics.”

Is it just me, or does Wal-Mart Loser Bingo seem a little… unevolved? The destitute ARE a hoot though.

I remember in the 50′s people friends used to parody the PSA of the time: “Hire the handicapped: they’re fun to watch.”

  5. Anonymous says:

Lola-at-large takes exception to people with iphones buying steak with food stamps. Here in Texas we don’t take kindly to the undeserving poor squandering our charity. Let ‘me sell som blood if they get a hankering for a steak.

Good news: A farm bill currently in the U.S. House of Representatives would cut more than $16 billion from food stamps.

What does that mean for Texas?

“Cut about 300,000 people in Texas,” Director of the Texas Hunger Initiative, Jeremy Everett, said.

  6. sophie says:

Anon, I don’t think it’s a parody of the poor, at least not at Walmart’s expense. One can see the same people everywhere these days, it’s more about the slob culture, imo. I’ve never lived near a Walmart, but when I have been able to shop at one, most of the cars in the parking lot look way nicer than whatever I’m driving…I still remember the photo of Donald and Ivana loading their car with back to college stuff, in a walmart parking lot.
I do appreciate your point, though..Some humor is definitely unevolved, which is why bathroom humor survives.

It smacks of cultural snobbery to me. I could do a version for Whole Foods shoppers:

      * Nerdy man wearing Che T-shirt & REI shorts – check
      * Mother aimlessly pushing stroller down aisle while toddlers remove random items from shelves – check
      * Pair of emaciated twenty-somethings, sporting blond dreadlocks, confused over which brand of kashi to purchase – check

      and so on.

The real joke is as one is laughing thier ass off , they suddenly read something that could describe them …oops. ” Ask not for whom the bell tolls…it tolls for thee “

  8. sophie says:

PS.. Have you ever seen what people buy on food stamps ? My most recent memory is a young man being trailed by 5 tots, with a cart loaded with ramen noodles and candy, and paying with food stamps.. It looked like he was too busy making babies to learn about nutrition..Lola’s daughter is only commenting on her bird’s eye view of a really sick situation.
I posted a couple of days ago on a news item that described Gov. Deval Patrick’s veto of a bill that would have made food stamps illegal at nail salons and jewelry stores, because it would make the poor feel ‘bad’ about themselves.. See Janis above:
If the food stamp program was used to buy actual ‘food’ and was limited to the truly needy, I doubt there would be much objection to it. But it needs remodeling desperately. I have work experience with WIC, which isn’t much better, imo.

    • paper doll says:

I think you are right…on the other hand food stamps, as they are, seems to be the only governmental economic stimulate that is spent and stimulates the economy.( the economy of a nail salon , but hey that’s an economy) I’m tried of the media beating up on the little guy for poor choices, while many more billions are given to banks and corporations who then sit on them. But it’s easy to hold the little guy ” accountable ” as billions are handed over …and in fact that’s one of the the media’s most important job.

    • Actually, the Patrick veto was over EBT cards. Food stamps were the first program to go EBT, which stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer. Now more and more states are starting to issue TANF benefits, or other cash benefits by way of EBT, and that’s the card that was subject to the Patrick veto. I actually agree with him, except for the porn issue. Porn should be a no brainer on welfare. Easy enough to ban that outright.

    • In other words, you still can’t spend food stamps on anything but food. Often crappy food, yes, but food nonetheless.

      Okay that made me laugh.

Thanks to the the ubiquitousness -and social acceptability- of deceit today among rich and poor and in between, a lot of people redeem food stamps for a lot of things besides food, including cash and of course that can be turned into anything at all.

No anonymous, you aren’t the only one.
The Bingo Card was repulsive. “No teeth” has nothing to do with slob culture. Poor people, formerly known as “middle class” can’t afford basic dental care in our so called richest country on earth. Hilarious!
And ” the bearded lady” can’t afford to see a doctor to adjust her wildly out of whack hormones, a possibly life threatening situation.
    Oh my sides!
Where’s Jacob Riis when we really need him? It’s how the other half lives, regardless of moral fiber or character, and paper doll is correct: unless you’re already in the one or two percent, the bell tolls for thee and me.

    • paper doll says:

      Oh my sides!

lol you made me laugh much harder than the card , Thanks Sweet Sue !

It breaks my heart that I have nothing in common with Walmart shoppers.

Because, you know, Walmart is what made American great.

    • Jay Floyd says:

I can’t entirely concur, but that’s only because I have no idea what ‘wolf boy’ means.

      And I’m glad of that.

Like Vegas, what happened in the 70s …

    • sophie says:

Zal, my first experience with WalMart was in Fl. I think we went to buy curtain rods. I could not believe the carts loaded with junk. How many plastic food containers and laundry baskets does anyone need ? Kids’ clothing that looked like it would last through 2 washings, if that.
The only thing the customers had that would outlast the contents of their cart, was the debt on the credit cards they were all using. I think this is how the meltdown started.

Look John, I only went into wal mart in my pajamas ONCE. It was ONE TIME. ;)

  15. elliesmom says:

I don’t think the people in this video are being mocked because they’re “poor”. Some of the outfits took real planning.

  16. sophie says:

I watched the above…oh my eyes, does walmart sell eye bleach ?

Lola I am anon. I must have signed in that way. My nom de web is rangoon78. I am not really from Texas. I was attempting to strive a blow against what I perceived as classism int this post and comments. At a time when millions are falling in to poverty worldwide, the folks at Walmart are us.

    • zaladonis says:

At a time when millions are falling in to poverty worldwide, the folks at Walmart are us.

The folks at Walmart are not me. And it has nothing to do with money or classism. It has to do with being either a part of the problem or part of a solution. Buying from Walmart, working for Walmart, is part of the problem.

If I can’t buy it from somewhere other than Walmart, I can do without.

  18. Anonymous says:

    “Strike a blow.” I can’t type.

  19. Sweet Sue says:

Just one more thing. I didn’t even see the white “girl” with the three or more “multi racial” kids.
That would be wrong or notable because————-.
    Why?

Who does she think she is ? Heidi Klum ?
