On Growing A Set

Mitt Romney needs to grow a set. I say this for the very self-centered reason that I don’t want to see another idiotic campaign in which one side beats the other to a pulp suffering no retaliation. Also, I cannot abide watching the Obama Trons get away with the same shit one more time. If the next 3 months are to be the Asshole-in-Chief beating up on the stilted Nice Rich Mormon – I’m out. McCain played nice and got his clock cleaned. No sympathy for the GOP from this blogger but I just can’t fathom why Reid hasn’t been eviscerated yet. Where is Lee Atwater’s ghost? Where is Karl Rove in the flesh?

Harry Reid, who may be the biggest asshole in the entire lower 48 – which is quite a feat all things considered – won’t shut up. Bullies like Reid don’t respond to being ignored or scolded. They respond to being destroyed. The Republic would be better off if he was destroyed and as it stand now the GOP is the only outfit equipped to do it.

So why hasn’t the GOP done it? Do they have no impulse toward self-preservation? Do they want to lose? Do they not yet understand who they are dealing with? (Chicago gangsters…duh…) Holder is now going after GOP money bags Adelson.   I think we can assume Obama’s gang means business with this tid bit. Screw Adelson. I really don’t care. But is Romney going to stand by as the attacks escalate – which they will – when the entire polluted history of Obama is available to respond with?  Team Obama will pull no punches. Yet, Romney is pulling his left and right.  Why?

Reid will keep farting accusations until…what?… Romney blinks and hands over 300 years of tax returns to David Axelrod. That’s what. The only thing that will stop Reid is vivisection via media. And trust me, there’s plenty to work with. Do I know where his skeletons are? Nope. But I could make some shit up right now if you like. Some dude who once rode an elevator with Obama told me he has documented proof Reid is a warlock and Obama was actually born in a Beijing brothel and had his horns removed when he was 13.

How’s that?

Romney seems content to allow anticipation of his VEEP choice to build. That’s what his “week” is about. This is a  foolish tactic and Obama is playing him like a cheap fiddle. Expectation builds to excess. He picks someone. Expectation will have inevitably been overwrought unless Abe Lincoln is still alive and available. So the media story becomes about disappointment. We return quickly to tax returns etc. Watch. This is the narrative being juiced by Team Barry as I type.

Dukakis stank is beginning to waft over the Romney campaign. It’s subtle but it’s there. The only way to deal with bullies is to hit back – twice as hard.

And the only way to deal with the hydra head that is the Obama gang is with a metaphorical two by four, a story or two or three that is so big and damning that the media is forced to report and respond. Again, there is plenty to work with. Start with his time at Columbia.  Why has the story linked landed on The Blaze for God’s sake? Get Jim Inhofe barking on the Senate floor about it. Send out the GOP pack dogs. What the hell have they been doing since Clinton was in office anyway?

I’m returning to my initial sense of Romney. He’s willing to go harsh to a degree – but simply doesn’t understand what he’s dealing with in Obama and Axelrod. He’s brought a horse and lance to fight a nuclear war. By not dropping the house on wicked witch Reid he’s either channeling John Kerry or actually does have something to hide. If the latter is true then – in the world of politics – that’s all the more reason to beat Reid to a pulp before a real story breaks. If you destroy Reid along the way at least you keep your base.

Politics is blood sport. The GOP was once masterful at it. The only Dem in a generation who could rise above it was Bill Clinton. Mitt Romney is no Bill Clinton. So unless his rich pals intend to crash the stock market in October, Mr. Romney needs to unleash the dogs, drop the anvil, push the button – choose the metaphor you like best.  Obama and the media are attacking from all sides. They won’t stop until their narrative is utterly absorbed. At which point it is functionally true with the masses. Lee Atwater buried Michael Dukakis in August. Karl Rove knee capped John Kerry in August. What they said, who they were, what they proposed as candidates could never rise past how they were tagged… in August. One would think the GOP would know this game. They created it after all.

Why not get a notary public to verify the actual percentage of taxes versus income that Romney has paid over the past several years? I think that is the one solid issue that won’t go away. What percentage of taxes versus income did Romney pay every year. As long as he paid something, even 10 percent or 12 percent would be fine by me and he doesn’t even have to reveal how much he made, just the percentage Romney paid in taxes.

    Don’t you agree?

    • I can’t believe that Romney hasn’t paid any taxes – I mean, is he so stupid to have done that while he has been running for POTUS for the past 15 years? Surely his accountant would have filed taxes – even a small percentage – instead of paying none.

BTW – Obama is out of his mind to be pushing this issue at the same time that he is covering the fraud of his bankster/millionaire friends in their triliion theft from We the People.

  2. List of X says:

I think Reid is acting is a lot like Trump in 2011. But Obama’s release of the long form birth certificate shut Trump up (almost – not fully but he faded deep enough into irrelevance). So to begin any serious attack on Reid, Romney should start by releasing his tax returns. Seriously, just how bad can they be? I give Mitt enough credit to be sure there is nothing illegal except maybe some shady but technically legal tax maneuvers which can be spun and explained, and then everyone could move on. But continuing bickering over nothing and vicious attacks against Reid do nothing good for Romney, especially because Romney isn’t running against Reid.

    • I completely disagree. The last thing Romney should do is release his taxes. It will just lead to more and more media scrutiny (and stories) about what those deductions mean, etc. The best thing for Romney to do is defend himself in a debate publicly stating that he will release his taxes if Obama releases— Fast & Furious documents, Columbia transcripts, Rezko dealings, secret meetings with Pharma, other secret communications with Solyndra, etc. People will be paying attention to the debates and Romney will have shifted the spotlight off of him. With the ball in Obama’s court, then they’ll have to wonder why Obama doesn’t do it since they made Romney’s taxes an issue in the first place.

    • List of X says:

@fembotsforobama: At least you are not asking Obama to release his Kenyan birth certificate, and letting him to keep at least something as a secret :) Yes, Romney can defend himself by asking Obama to release every document with Obama’s name on it, but I am sure you realize, it’s not a equal trade to exchange all of Barack’s secrets for a few Mitt’s tax returns. To match that, Romney would have to release every Bain e-mail and every single internal document from his MA governorship. I realize that the the tax returns issue is a distraction, and he is not legally obligated to release any tax returns. But while Romney refuses to release then, swing voters will continue to wonder just how terrible are the things Romney is hiding these, so this will continue to hurt Romney either until the election, or until he releases the returns, or until something even worse for Romney comes up.

    • JohnSmart says:

X’s comment is solid. That is it’s exactly the points Obama wants made. And as gutter politics it’s not entirely without merit. Keep the focus on the other guy – is the point.

We could just go nuclear on all documents and I’m willing to bet right now that Romney would win that battle. The criminal illegals stuff and the WH trying to protect vandal Occupiers came out just today. The Fast and Furious executive privileged docos must be juicy. Also today Geithner’s emails about looting non union pensions… good stuff. all that aside the Columbia records are easily the most suspicious of the lot. It’s weird beyond weird that Obama is so defensive about them. We got Perry’s sad college records in an instant after he announced. What is the “genius” POTUS so up tight about?
Do he get foreign student aid? If we are going to accuse Romney of not paying taxes I think asking Obama how he paid for 3 wicked expensive colleges is in the ball park of fair. Romney was accused of criminal behavior. Asking Barry S. to cough up his college records doesn’t seem so awful.

    3 words John. “Rope-a-dope”

  4. angienc says:

John, you really couldn’t be more wrong on this, IMO. What you are forgetting with Kerry is there were actual people who served with him, who gave their names & spoke to the camera. Now, they could have been 100% lying and distorting Kerry’s actual Vietnam record but they confronted Kerry to his face with their accusations. That was no “some guy told me” from a political hack. And what you are forgetting about Dukakis is that as unfair as the Willie Horton ads were & as much as they played into racists fears (as they were designed to do), there was actually a guy named Willie Horton who was convicted of murder without the possibility of parole who was given a weekend furlough from which he did not return and he committed assault, armed robbery and rape. And while Dukakis did not create that insane “weekend furlough” program in MA, he did support it & Horton *was* given the furlough while Dukakis was governor. Also, Dukakis really, truly lost that race when he answered the question about “what if your wife was raped” at the debate, not in August. I remember it well because Bush v. Dukakis was the first presidential election I could vote in.

Obama only *wishes* he had a Willie Horton or people actually willing to show their faces & give their names in TV ads to smear Romney. If he did, he wouldn’t be having Reid (Congress has a 9% approval rating with the American public) acting like Joe McCarthy (and the pundits are actually making that comparison now after Romney surrogates went on TV this Sunday & called Reid’s “let Romney prove he paid taxes” for what it is). Don’t listen to the Obama PR Team (also known as the MSM) — the American people don’t like the “guilty until proven innocent” tact Obama is using here. If anything, it has helped Romney — because he sure as heck can’t roll over & give Obama his tax returns prior to 2010 & 2011 now and the vast majority of people out there will agree with him on that because it is clear that what Romney said from the start is true — he agreed to give 2, so they want 10; if he gave 10, they’d ask for 15 — anything to keep the focus off of the economy — because it isn’t Romney’s tax returns that gave us 42 months of +8% unemployment or got our credit rated downgraded. (Anyone advocating that Romney *should* release more tax returns now or any information whatsoever on his taxes prior to 2010 is either pro-Obama or hasn’t thought it through. I can understand John’s argument to punch back twice as hard, but giving the bully *exactly* what he wants is the dumbest tactic I’ve ever heard of. And lets make this clear — 2 years of tax returns is MORE than is legally required — Romney filed a financial disclosure form, as required by law, which actually shows more information on Romney’s financial situation as it lists all assets & value of same, whereas tax returns just show income. Releasing tax returns is *not* required by law. Furthermore, we know for a FACT that Romney paid more than 7 million in taxes in 2010 & 2011. Thus, anyone with two brain cells to rub together knows that Reid’s statement that he “hasn’t paid ANY taxes for the last 10 years” is patently false right there).

Romney has out raised Obama 3 months in a row now; Obama is burning through cash at an enormous rate because of his overhead despite his non-stop fundraising; and Obama just blew $100 million on negative ads to “define” Romney that didn’t move the needle in the polls. Unfortunately, the only one who got “defined” is Obama — as the thug he is (his negatives actually rose — the only real results the polls show after that $100 million on ads bashing Romney) and the “You didn’t build that” remark. The Reid distraction is a desperate ploy that Obama is hoping sticks — but it will not — “You didn’t build that” has stuck to Obama & has resonated with voters more than Romney’s tax returns ever will because voters already knew Romney was rich — what they didn’t know is that Mr. HopeandChange was nothing but a 2 bit Chicago pol nor did they *know* — even if they suspected — how he *really* felt about the private sector v. the public sector. Once Romney becomes the official nominee at the convention & can access that GE money, he’s going to run those “These Hands” ads more then he already is, and even +19 Dem skewed Pew polls will not be able to get Obama to 50%.

    • angienc says:

One more thing about the tax issue — I have to wonder if people complaining about Romney’s effective tax rate actual file income taxes and if they do, do they understand that things like a mortgage interest deduction & student loan interest deduction are “loopholes” that lower one’s tax rate. Personally, I take both & my effective tax rate is less than Romney’s as a result. Furthermore, Romney’s 2010 return & 2011 estimate shows that he has give more than $4 million a year to charity — if you give that much to charity (also, technically a “loophole”), you are going to really lower your effective tax rate — that has *nothing* to do with Swiss bank accounts or Cayman Island investments. In fact, if you look at Romney’s 2010 tax returns you will see that he is paying taxes on an extra $1 million in income that he didn’t actually receive (this is called “phantom income” — and in Romney’s case it is because of the way some of his investments are set up, under the tax code he is credited as “earning” money that he doesn’t actually receive. Another, more common way a person would pay taxes on “phantom income” under the tax code is debt forgiveness, from a credit card company, etc. — obviously, this isn’t what happened with Romney). This is public info because he released his 2010 tax return but notice how none of that is mentioned in the MSM or Team Obama — instead they lie & distort what is actually in the returns because they know most people will not view the returns themselves and/or because these are complex returns (2010 returns total 270 pages) they will not understand what is going on in them unless they are well versed in the tax code. But you can view it (as well as all the federal & state financial disclosure forms he’s filed) for yourself here:

      http://www.mittromney.com/learn/mitt/tax-return/main

Also, my final word on this is to quote the highly esteemed Judge Learned Hand on the issue:

“Anyone may arrange his affairs so that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which best pays the treasury. There is not even a patriotic duty to increase one’s taxes. Over and over again the Courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everyone does it, rich and poor alike and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands.”

    • myiq2xu says:

Because Romney’s income is “unearned” his maximum tax rate is 15% even if he has no deductions.

    • myiq2xu says:

I’m wondering if Romney isn’t planning to eventually release more tax returns but he wants to wait until the right time. I really doubt there is anything in there anyway – Romney seems to be squeaky-clean when it comes to following the law.

What if at one of the debates the issue of tax returns comes up and Romney turns to Obama and says “I’ll release my tax returns when you unseal your school records”?

    • That’s the exact scenario I imagined last week, myiq. It would be a delicious moment. Again, Romney is on the voters timeline, not the media’s. And that benefits him ultimately.

    • What angienc & myiq said!

  5. Anonymous says:

Team Obama will pull no punches. Yet, Romney is pulling his left and right. Why?

Because we are who we are, John.

Obama is a fighter and he scores his victories by pulling no punches. He isn’t restrained by rules or any sense of decency. He’s mean, he enjoys hurting and he doesn’t hold back an attack if there’s a possibility he’ll end up with broken bones. In fact something in him taunts being hurt; “come on, come get me, I’m ready for you!” He was hurt badly in his youth and that’s damage that can trouble friendly relationships but fighting and being hurt comes naturally to someone who grew up with it and honed tools to survive it. When Obama looked for a place that felt like home to him, a place simpatico with who he was and who he wanted to be, he chose not only Chicago, he took to the destructive cheating side of town.

Romney is a gentleman. He grew up heterosexual, male, white, rich, privileged, and good looking. Everybody suffers somehow but Romney never had to endure the isolation and loneliness and abandonment and depth of pain –and anger– that a little boy abandoned by his African father and white mother, raised by his white grandparents, did. Romney didn’t settle in a place like Chicago, he chose polite Boston, lovely New England, and now he’s going to build a greedy entitled (blocking neighbor’s views) house in La Jolla, a place that’s the essence of within the rules. He’s driven to win and he doesn’t mind shoeing aside invisible little people, and he’ll even do something dirty, a little mean if he can get away with it on the sly, but he won’t go for the really big punch that everybody can see, not to the African American President of the United States when everybody’s watching; and he won’t purposefully leave himself vulnerable to retaliation.

Look at Obama and his family then at Romney and his. Threaten Michelle and it would only make Barack stronger; threaten Ann Romney and Mitt will back off. Mitt Romney has a home, Barack Obama doesn’t; this creates different strengths and weaknesses. To Obama, his wife and daughters are props, tools, sword or shield, Obama isn’t capable of love outside himself; but Romney has built a family and needs his family, he cares about them in a way that someone as damaged as Obama can’t. The latter makes for a happier life but in battle makes a man vulnerable and weaker, it makes him hesitate the trigger, pull a punch, think twice before charging full speed toward possible death.

This has nothing to do with taxes; Team Obama just keeps throwing whatever they can get their hands on (Bain didn’t work) until something sticks and then they point at it and scream, “Look! There’s dirty horrible mud on him!” You keep saying this election is about competence but as I keep trying to explain, it’s not. No campaign Obama has ever been in is about competence, and as long as he’s got control of the microphone his last one won’t be about competence either. Most Americans have become as malleable as silly putty; they’ll do as they’re manipulated.

  6. boutis says:

It is time for a Romney surrogates to come out and say where are President Obama’s foreign exchange student transcripts from university? Then logically lay out the reasons that this is the only reasonable deduction for a brilliant student, with incredible aptitude and potential, who left no social or academic trail. No papers or articles written for Harvard Law Review. Composite girlfriends. No one remembers him except some pot buddies. I think he laid low as a foreign student and was “passed”. This is why he is astonishingly ignorant after “passing” through some of the world’s best schools because he did not participate or go to class much. If he had he would have been more likely to have been spotted as a fake by professors and students and had his freebies yanked at Columbia. By the time he was at Harvard Law he was adept at faking it. His mother as a professional student and grant receiver knew how to do this. His father followed this path and strung it out until he was booted by immigration. He used a fictitious and exotic birthplace to pimp his books until it was no longer needed or convenient. If it was a few semesters of bad grades he could take the hit with the old I was young and stupid for a while which so many of us were. Why would someone spend this much money to keep them out of the public eye? To me at least the only logical conclusion to a butt covering of this magnitude is fraud.

The Harry Reid thing is awful. But it brings the bar down low enough to give the Republican surrogates an opening. Obama is a liar. He says one thing and does another. He is is a blatant opportunist. He is astonishing ignorant about economics. He has a law degree from arguably the best law school in the world but does not understand the purpose of the Supreme Court and he never wrote a brief that has been located. His entire life is one big red flag after another. Is he a fake or con? If not, prove it. And trotting out Laurence Tribe to say he was the most brilliant student ever is not going to cut it. Show it to me in black and white. And remember Ivy League schools, altering the record makes all of your transcripts worthless.

    • paper doll says:

Indeed and where ARE Mittens surrogates? A GOPer who’s supposed to win always has a pack of rabid attacks dogs working on thier behalf…. the pack has been missing for years now

  7. Anonymous says:

The tax issue does not affect people on an emotional level. That’s why it won’t work any better than the Bain attacks.

    • dailypuma says:

If Romney actually paid no taxes, that would adversely affect people.

Is it possible that Romney’s donations to non profits are the highest on record for any prior presidential candidate? If so, that could blunt any talk of not paying enough in taxes. However, if he really paid zero taxes for a few years, unless the charitable donations were for an equal or greater amount than he should have paid in taxes, it would be an issue.

If Romney actually paid out in charitable donations an equivalent amount to what he should have paid in taxes, he could actually be Romney Hood.

  8. Anthony says:

Well, angienc and boutis already wrote a lot of what I was thinking after reading today’s post. That leaves me with this:

Romney plays by the rules. Some of the rules (like the tax laws) aren’t the best, but who do you know that didn’t try to deduct as much as they legally were able when filing their taxes? That’s one reason why this chicken isn’t making soup. Harry Reid’s “imaginary friend” isn’t exactly making Obama’s case about Romney’s alleged tax evasion. If anything, its exposing it for the straw man it is.

The other *rule* that Romney is playing by is that until he is officially nominated, he will continue to campaign as presumptive nominee. After the convention, he will have access to not only his PAC monies but also RNC funding. In the meantime, his surrogates are out there carrying a unified message. How anyone can say that he’s not punching back is beyond me. His “These Hands” ads are imo the most effective political ads I can think of. Why? Because they keep Obamas statement in full context exactly the way it came out of his mouth and every time someone hears it repeated, the indignation they felt the first time they heard it rises up again and becomes re-enforced. Brilliant.

I’m not so naive to think that our political process is not shady and twisted. Lets be straight about this: Its all about the money. If you follow the money, more small donors (less than $250) donated to Romney’s campaign this past month than to Obama’s campaign. That is perhaps the most telling indication of who stands the best chance of winning in November at this time. My money is on Romney, and I do NOT have a problem with his personal wealth as some here seem to. If any of us could make that kind of money and invest it well enough to earn $20M in interest per year, we would. Anyone who says they wouldn’t is either lying or out of touch.

    • Has this ad been posted yet? “Estas Manos”, These Hands in Spanish, with a Hispanic small business owner is very effective:

    • Anthony says:

fembots, I posted it yesterday in a few places, and am continuing to do it today. Obama’s gaffe is priceless, and can continue to be fine tuned to any demographic. I really think that behind the scenes, O’s handlers are figuratively kicking his ass for being either stupid or lazy enough to take Elizabeth Warren’s diatribe against GE for not paying taxes and directing it toward we, the people (who actually do pay taxes.

Now I want someone to tell me again just how competent he is and how he’s going to win in November.

  9. sophie says:

    Too true, anony
In the end, the accusers of Kerry and Dukakis ended up looking desperate. Big Deb W. and her sidekick Harry are going down that road too. Both, imo, are being manipulated from the WH., they will become suicidal when they realize how their careers were pushed off the cliff, all for the glory of being O shills..
Kerry and Dukakis lost due to their own creepiness and failure to relate to the voters, . Never discount the strength of the ‘ick’ factor.

  10. votermom says:

Harry Reid is a distraction. Romney’s attacks are focused on the economy and on Obama’s dismal job performance.
At the end of the day voters don’t care about someone else’s tax returns – they care about their own lack of income.

  11. zaladonis says:

This has nothing to do with taxes.

The strategy is getting people talking about this when your real (subliminal) attack is about that and hoping your opponent is sensitive enough about this to bungle his inadvertent response about that.

And John’s right, Romney’s bungling it. It’s August and people are paying only semi-attention, but if Romney doesn’t sweep this off the stage the stink is going to linger throughout the autumn.

It seems incredible but the Romney camp seems not to have been prepared for this. It’s really such an obvious implication-attack against the man who’d be the wealthiest President ever: show us your taxes.

  12. Anthony says:

It’s really such an obvious implication-attack against the man who’d be the wealthiest President ever: show us your taxes.

What does personal wealth have to do with efficacy in office? Just wondering why you think thats so important.

I obviously disagree with your take on this, but am not trying to say “Your wrong because I think differently about this”, so lets not waste time on making your point again. You’ve already made it. I am simply curious about what personal assets have to do with ones ability to govern and make competent decisions.

    • zaladonis says:

Wealth, in and of itself, needn’t necessarily have anything to do with efficacy in office. Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, a Republican and a Democrat, two Presidents I often cite as very effective at dealing with problems similar to the financial and economic ones we face today, both were wealthy.

    • George Washington was our wealthiest president ever, according to the CS Monitor. 9 of the top ten are some of our most beloved presidents. http://www.csmonitor.com/Business/2012/0220/Presidents-Day-trivia-Who-were-the-10-richest-US-presidents/George-Washington-525-million

    • zaladonis says:

      Huh. I’ll be darned.

Okay, I stand corrected. Washington was our wealthiest President.

Romney would be our wealthiest in 200 years.

    • Anthony says:

Zal, if I am to take you at your word re: Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, why do Romney’s tax returns even matter? All they’re going to show is a man who earned a lot of money, invested it wisely enough to live off the interest and who pays his taxes in accordance with the law. I still don’t get why this such a bfd

    • zaladonis says:

Romney’s returns don’t matter to me, Anthony.

Further, as I’ve said, his tax returns are not the point Reid little kerfuffle is really about.

    • Zal, so what is your point? I’m curious what you think the “that” is. Please tell us.

    • Anthony says:

fembots, there is obviously no point. I gave up after a couple of tries because its obvious there will never be an answer forthcoming. Its just an attempt to vilify Romney because he has more money than most people.

    • zaladonis says:

That is that Romney is the dreaded 1%. He’s Leona “only the little people pay taxes” Helmsley.

It’s a strategy that’s been used a lot in modern campaigns. Atwater and Rove and Axelrod are referenced in discussions but maybe people have forgotten what their winning strategies were.

    • tamerlane says:

This election isn’t to select the most competent person for the job. It’s a popularity contest. obama’s flipping off MR as a1%er with one hand, while with the other giving vigorous hand jobs to … the 1%ers.

    • zaladonis says:

      That’s what’ll get him a second term.

  13. You know I love you, John, but every time I read one of these diatribes of yours, I just think back…this is the guy who also thought Fred Thompson was a winner. *snort* I just don’t think you understand the politics of the current incarnation of the GOP.

We shall see, we shall see. I’m as confident as ever.

    • JohnSmart says:

Ah Lola – I appreciate this comment. I truly do. One thing I try to remember always is that I could be wrong. I mean it. Politics isn’t science. Besides, if I was right all the time we would not have interesting discussions here. We shall see indeed. I do think Romney is better equipped to rise above all this August clap trap in the Fall than Kerry or Dukakis. More dough. A bad econ. etc.

And I don’t think the tax returns themselves matter much at all. It’s the attacks that matter. It’s the drum beat. Reid knows this. Facts have almost nothing to do with it.

I saw an ad this morning on line that states – in essence – that Romney causes cancer. This may be the Dems achilles heal- going to far.

    • It was a playful jab, and I’m glad you took it that way. I pondered that comment for a month before I posted it, ftr.

I also saw the ad on the steel plant worker/cancer wife. The problem with the ad is 2-fold:

      1) The guy said his wages had been cut in half with the job he got after the plant closed and he lost his insurance. Well, so did I. I lost my job in 2010 and even though I do the same work now that I did then, I make half of what I did because it’s on contract. I also work harder for it (though I always worked hard). I have nominal health insurance that will go away in 2014 because it doesn’t qualifiy under the ACA, thus it can’t be offered. And I will then be taxed because of it, adding insult to injury. So basically, cry me a river, even if I do have sympathy for the loss of his wife.

      2) He said himself in the ad that his wife didn’t speak up and got treatment late. That’s demonstrably not Romney’s fault. The family clearly did not want to accept welfare, which they would have qualified for if she had been diagnosed in a timely manner. This is another example of WHY working Americans hate the idea of welfare, but in this case, pride went before the fall.

That’s likely how the working public will see it too, anyway. The ad itself invites comparison to Obama, not Romney.

    • Lola, I’m glad you brought up this ad.

      Doesn’t the “Understands” ad also make the point FOR capitalism. He’s not lamenting the fact that he doesn’t have Obamacare, what he laments is the loss of his job under Romney. So it indirectly reminds us, if we lost a job and bad things happened to us, that we were better off when we had jobs. And the only job the guy could get was a custodial position, which hasn’t changed under the Obama Economy. {My husband pointed this out to me when he saw it.}

Romney has already released a financial statement, which would tell most voters more than enough about his wealth.
Tax returns sound scariest to those who have never had to pay taxes, and O’s already got a lot of those votes.
O is desperately trying to raise money from the vanishing middle class, he even had to donate the cost of one of MO’s sweaters to himself, just to set an example. His problem is thinking we don’t know that 5 grand is a micro drop in the bucket in His house.and wasn’t earned honestly in the first place.
Avoiding the media for a few days, along with some deep breaths, will restore common sense.By the way, has anyone seen Harry’s returns, or Big Deb’s ? Of course not, they won’t release them.

  15. The “Show us Obama’s school records and we’ll give up the tax returns” is the response I would love to see. One could add the Illinois State Senate records, his student loan records etc etc etc. I seriously doubt Romney broke any tax laws and the O camp knows it. I hope this comes back to bite the D’s in the ass hard enough to give them all rabies.

    • Anthony says:

When Romney is officially the GOP nominee (right now, he’s technically “presumptive”), I think your wish will be granted. Not only his transcript, but everything else under the sun he’s been hiding for the past several years.

    • And I believe we will see all over the internet references to comments by Alice Palmer and the other AA IL state legislators who admitted that they threw legislation Obama’s way and made others give up their name as sponsors just to further Obama’s career.

      I can’t wait for that.

    • greyledgegal says:

It’s a trap. If O ever releases any records, they will probably be forgeries. Even if they are not, he knows the conspiracy theorists on the right will spend the rest of the campaign trying to prove they are fakes. That beclowns the right, acts as a distraction from the serious issues, and achieves exactly what Obama wants.

    • greyledgegal says:

I hate how this stuff nests. That aside, even with everything we’ve seen from the Obami over the last 5 years, it’s amazing, almost restorative, that most of us still believe the truth is out there and won’t have been propagandized or manipulated.

  16. sophie says:

Anthony, surely you know that will never happen. O still may have hope for post presidential goodies. He will find them cut short, at least from some quarters, when he says, as opposed to Nixon ” I really am a crook.”

Out-fucking-standing journalism, if I do say so myself. Deserves a fucking Pulitzer.

A complete waste of time & money to even send a writer to Cleveland to come back with essentially nothing. Except maybe for the writer himself, who likely got to bang the chick he met at the airport bar, and listed the drinks and the condom on his expense sheet.

And to think trees died to print such drivel!

    • tamerlane says:

But, as a lifelong reader, it also made me aware of how ingrained a bias is in our Fifth Estate. Alas, a 90% Dem city and 99% Dem staff sees, hears, reads, writes no evil. It has handled the downsizing of print media horribly and frankly – it’s a Chicago paper not an LA paper now. Tribune = Chicago machine which = pro Obama slant to a silly degree.

      Exactly!

If you will not or cannot stand up for yourself.

The Dukakis and Kerry episodes keep being brought up. This holds true, I think, in both cases. Nobody really thought Dukakis, as President, would set murderers free to rape and murder again, or that he didn’t care if his wife were raped and murdered, but he wasn’t able to stand up for himself. Ditto Kerry. Nobody really cared about whatever happened with him in Viet Nam, it was that he couldn’t stand up to the swiftboaters.

Rich people (and politicians) finding loopholes to get out of paying taxes is a big yawn. We know they all do it (or assume they do).

I don’t think people care about Obama’s school records either. Like votermom said, people care about their own lack of income.

    • It’s not just rich people. I look for loopholes too, and find them. I cut my tax bill half last year doing it.

    • Jay Floyd says:

Is there a difference between a loophole and a legit deduction? I deduct everything I can think of… but I’m a sole proprietor.

    • zaladonis says:

A tax loophole is an exploitation of the wording of a tax law, it’s taking advantage of an uncrossed “t,” or “loophole,” in the law, a deduction or credit or some other way to avoid paying tax that the original law did not intend.

      It’s cheating.

Bragging that one takes advantage of loopholes is a perfect example of the scammer thought process that’s destroying this country. If the United States is, indeed, made up of scammers from Washington to Wall Street to government workers to public housing, and honorable people are considered suckers, where do you think this social structure leads?

    • myiq2xu says:

Is there a difference between a loophole and a legit deduction?

If you take it then it is a legit deduction. If someone else uses it then it’s a loophole.

    • Jay Floyd says:

Zal, perhaps from your days at Goldman you can give an example of a loophole? I’m just not aware of any specific ‘loopholes’ because I don’t move in those financial circles. I am just wondering if, like myiq says, they’re really the same thing. Is it just badly written tax law?

    • zaladonis says:

Well Jay, you say you’re a sole proprietor so I’ll give you an example there. If you say you regularly meet clients at your house, you can deduct a portion of house expenses, which includes rent and upkeep including outdoor maintenance like landscaping, etc. The deductible portion is based on the percentage of the home that’s used for business, but the IRS doesn’t require you document client meetings with time-stamped photos or anything so it’s really the percentage that you say is used for business. A guy who did consulting work for Goldman laughed about how, when an IRS auditor spent a week at his house he’d rearranged fully half his home into “office” and “meeting” space, using household tables and chairs and every family member’s computer equipment and everything else that seemed remotely office-like from other parts of the house. I said, “they didn’t wonder why your “desk” was a dining table that seats twelve and your dining room was filled with sofas and chairs?” “I got away with it!” he crowed. He even deducted a portion of the pool maintenance.

Of course, there’s more than one business form, and each probably has loophole potential. For instance John Edwards and Newt Gingrich famously exploited a loophole in the S-Corporation form. You set up a S-Corp with yourself as sole shareholder and have all your income dumped into it then pay yourself the lowest possible salary (the law requires only that your salary be “reasonable”) and characterize the rest as “business profit” for the S-Corp, then cut a check for yourself as shareholder for the “net profits” and that amount is subject only to Federal Income Tax, not to FICA, thereby avoiding the 2.9% Medicare tax. I don’t remember the exact numbers but Edwards’ S-Corp made upwards of $25 million the year he paid himself a salary of $350,000, then took the rest as shareholder distribution of net profit, which kept hundreds of thousands of dollars in his pocket, a percentage of income that non-cheaters pay to Medicare.

I admit, you hear about people like Edwards and Gingrich getting away with this stuff and think why should I be a schmuck, why shouldn’t I use whatever loophole I can find and keep a few bucks for myself. They’re keeping hundreds of thousands, what do my paltry hundreds or even few thousand matter? Well it matters because whether we’re honorable or cheaters defines who we are as individuals and as a society. And the lies and deceptions add up. I had an aunt who used to define right and wrong with stuff like this by saying, “Just ask yourself, what would happen if everybody did it?” Well now we’re seeing what happens when “everybody” is okay with lying and cheating. The financial crisis of 2008 was a ramification of that, bankers scamming, home buyers and mortgage holders scamming; eventually scamming comes tumbling down. If scamming is done by a minority on the margins of society, a few people get hurt; if it’s SOP for a society, we all fall down. And Americans didn’t learn in 2008; the scam train has throttled full steam ahead the past couple of years.

    • myiq2xu says:

If it’s legal it’s not cheating.

    • zaladonis says:

Fine, stick with taxes. In the two examples I gave Jay I explained legal ways people cheat.

Here’s an article that explains some ways to legally cheat:

So what’s the easiest way to cheat on your taxes?

Run your own company. More specifically, as Greg Kyte, a Utah C.P.A., puts it, be the sole proprietor of a Schedule C business. Then you can buy stuff for yourself and probably write it off as a business expense. “You can look through your receipts for the year and say, ‘Here’s some stuff I bought at Home Depot,’ ” says Kyte (who, for the record, says he never does this). “The I.R.S. would have no idea if I bought that for my house or for my business.” There were more than 20 million Schedule C returns filed in 2009, with receipts of more than $1.2 trillion.

Upstanding Schedule C filers have options, too. They can legally write off payment for office work done by family members, even if they’re in middle school. “I’ve seen people with infant children claiming that their kids are doing work,” says Howard Rosen, a St. Louis-based C.P.A. “I’m talking about a 3-year-old doing filing,” Rosen says. “He didn’t even know the alphabet.”

      http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/08/magazine/whats-the-easiest-way-to-cheat-on-your-taxes.html?pagewanted=all

When you do something that squeaks by the legal wording of a law but runs contrary to the intent of the law, it’s cheating. People who do that and don’t realize it’s wrong and it’s cheating have no moral compass.

    • zaladonis says:

      Dammit!

I will not feed the troll. I will not feed the troll. I will not feed the troll.

      You feed Lola every day.

Maybe you can find a 12-step program for your problem.

    • Jay Floyd says:

Zal — I actually do work from home and take the corresponding deduction.

So it’s not that the loopholes are illegal, it’s that they’re cleverly but legally manipulated against the law’s actual purpose.

I don’t know. Having just recovered from a severe downturn in my business and finances, I’m less inclined to think that it’s morally bankrupt to keep as much money for yourself as the law will allow. What seems like excess can become much needed funds in an instant. The comparison between my finances and those of the ‘rich’ are only similar in principle, though. But that’s why I was poking around this subject with you. I’ve started to wonder if people are screaming ‘loophole exploiting monster!’ just because most people resent the wealthy at this point.

    • zaladonis says:

Subprime mortgages and adjustable interest rates and securitization and hedge funds were all legal; it was exploitation of the laws by people who cheat a little here or a lot there, literally conforming to the law but actually conducting business in a way that’s outside the intent, that’s unethical, this is what led to the financial crisis in 2008. Strict regulatory laws had been overturned and what was left allowed cheaters to cheat and do so legally.

Cheating is cheating and it’s wrong; the end result is terrible consequences. When a population, whether it’s the population of bankers or news organizations or a nation’s citizenry, makes excuses for cheating, defends it, makes it acceptable, the only way that story can end is in disaster.

The only way this country or any free nation holds together and thrives is with a moral foundation: we all have to agree that cheating and lying is not sanctioned and doing the right thing is what we’ll defend.

    • Jay Floyd says:

It’s the jump from exploiting a loophole that is actually there to cheating that I’m quibbling with.

    • zaladonis says:

A quibble I’ve had a thousand and one times the past decade with friends I adore who work in finance. Most of them and I are not friends now. A few are.

And you must go with yours.

  22. Dan Sh1138 says:

I had a longer post about this, but I’ll just ask a few questions just to get people to respond:

Age and Citizenship requirements – US Constitution, Article II, Section 1

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

    Based on that:

    1. Is it wrong that we ask government officials, presedential candidates release their birth records, tax records, academic records as part of our evaluation in terms of vetting them for capability and credibility?
    2. If it’s wrong, based on Article II, Section 1.. has Barry done enough by FINALLY supplying his birth certificate?
    3. If it’s still OK to ask those questions of anyone, why can’t Obama be expected to answer them?

Because if it is wrong to ask those questions, all Romney has to say is “screw you, I’m qualifited under the Constitution and I’ll reserve the right to hide as much crap as you do unless you’re willing to put up or shut up”

If its’ right to ask those questions…then Romney needs to grow a pair because he’s getting gamed…and he might want to give Jack Ryan a call because he can probably give him some advice on how to handle Barry/Axelrod when it comes to releasing records.

    • tamerlane says:

      1) If barry had been officially adopted by his stepdad &/or his grandparents, then the BC he released is obsolete, as subsequent BCs would have been issued with each adoption;

      3) Despite barry’s use of different names over his life, we have no record of him ever legally changing his name;

      4) barry’s globe-trottiing in 1981: release the old passport used; release the written State Dept. waiver needed to enter Pakistan;

      5) Release the college admissions applications, student loan info, and grade records (note: hippie Occidental kept no GPA records back then).

The birth stuff will never get out of the gate. The college records can be attacked.

I’m assuming that goes for financial docs as well.

My point is, Obama is able to play the victim card when people ask him to provide documents/transcripts above and beyond legal qualifications and act like he’s being hard done by, but then in the same breath through his campaign mouthpieces imply that Romney isn’t playing fair because Harry Ried heard it from his brother’s roomate’s sisters cousin’s college roomate that Romney has some sketchy tax returns?

The man “starring” in Obama’s video said he was aware of all that, but regardless of the facts, “That’s how I feel about it!”

All admission and financial aid applications were signed under penalty of perjury or verified under oath; O probably lied under oath.

As a result of all my “birther” (sic) research, I’m convinced barry soetero was milking his Indonesian citizenship all throughout his college years.

    • NoEmptySuits says:

      Agreed, Tamer.

Also, believing Barry is (or at least was) an Indonesian citizen (through his mother’s marriage to Lolo Soetero while he was a monor) doesn’t mean one denies his American citizenship: tons of Americans (natural-born or naturalized) have dual citizenship.

Oblahblah and family will just spend it on themselves.

This is where Romney supporters sound so much like the delusion of 2008 Obama supporters and 2000 Bush supporters.

The “bow to bankers” line is nothing but media verbiage. It doesn’t mean anything in practical terms.

      Think!

Politicians make laws that benefit bankers because it benefits the lawmakers. Whether it’s because they want to get money (Reagan, Clinton, Obama) or because they’ve already got it (Bush, Romney) and are simpatico with bankers already, it comes out the same.

Concocting reasons to support any of the politicians who’ve shown whose side they’re on is feeding the same beast. To paraphrase Maya Angelou, when someone shows you who they are, believe them.

George Carlin got it right years ago when he said they’re all in the same club and we’re not in it.

I still think overall Obama is a much more dangerous man than Romney but in terms of bankers and Wall Street, going from Obama to Romney is frying pan into the fire.

    • Kim says:

No, Dowd’s “column” is a pro-Obama piece disguised as a critical one. These pop up all the time to advance certain pro-O memes, made more palatable to those who are not O fans by throwing in some catty little disses and expressions of “disappointment”. Also, if a writer is seen occasionally tossing mildly critical fluffballs around, when they do unleash a slobbery lovefest it is more likely to be seriously considered because of the illusion of “balance”.

This column simply advances the memes of “Obama is so focused on policy that he forgets to be grateful” , “he’s a selfmade success who ‘smashed through barriers of dysfunction’, “he takes large donations without giving anything to the donor in return“, and “he’s too above-it-all and high-minded to understand how much others crave his attention”. It’s utter BS, as most of Dowd’s columns are. She is nothing but a shill, and the NYT has been reduced to not much more than a vehicle for this kind of propogandic tripe.

    • Anonymous says:

      Good call Kim!

    • Anthony says:

Right on the money, Kim. Dowd is still licking his butt, no matter how she tries to say she is only sniffing.
