Oh my, the “God/Jerusalem” debacle at the DNC is hilarious. First they didn’t care. Then they defended idiotically. Then they realized it was a problem. Then they sent Villaraigosa out to create reality. He’s not good at it. On what planet did 2/3rds approve on any of these voice votes?
I’m recording Clinton’s speech tonight and will watch later. Feel free to comment about it as he speaks if you like.

The vote was taken in strict accordance with the Obama rules.
Obama panicked –
http://thecable.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/09/05/dems_change_platform_to_include_jerusalem_language_after_obama_intervened
This is what you get when you elect as president the kid who in school used to hand in his 5-page essay two days late and three pages short.
Watching Villaraigosa flail kinda makes my day.
“I’ve evolved to believe that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel…”
Okay, fact: I just don’t like Sandra Fluke. Is that fair? No. Is it truthful? Yes. She’s a type that grates on me. She’s becoming the Santorum of the Left for me.
Oh I really liked her. And I thought she deserved her “moment in the sun” after what that filthy pig Lush Rumball did to her.
Interesting Annie… I’ve got no particular beef with Fluke – not one I can directly point to. I just find her a truly shitty spokeswoman. I get her argument. I’ve mixed feeling about it. But Fluke is harsh, prissy…and annoying. She’s a law student at great school. This is hardly the stuff of victimhood. Limpbaugh did not “do” any thing to her. He called her a name. He was an asshole. He apologized. She is not a victim of anything. An asshole called her a name. It happens all the time. Fluke doesn’t get a pass from the rough and tumble of American discourse. She took a controversial stand in public. This is what happens. It’s ugly but it’s a fact. I’d argue that Rush L. made her the moment he called her a slut. She would not have been speaking tonight if he had not. Is RL a sexist pig? You betcha.
I can hear Warren make the same arguments and not flinch. Fluke strikes me as a brat who stuck it “rich” when an asshole on the right was an asshole in her direction. and I suspect she doesn’t represent most women at all.
She’s not a politician, she’s a student that participated, or tried to participate in our government on an issue she believes in. I doubt if she went into it expecting what she got from Lush, which I don’t think would be a pleasant experience myself, and I’m pretty tough. Besides his “apology” was crap. Totally insincere. Just sayin’.
Fluke is no fluke — she didn’t come out of nowhere. She’s been a strident, ‘that’s not funny’ women’s issue agitator for years.
Was Fluke for Obama or Hillary during the primaries? Anyone know?
As fake as they are, I might consider giving the Dems a chance if they were prosemiitic. As it is, fuck ‘em.
Andy, I sincerely apologize for calling you an Obot the other day. (UW corrected me.) I didn’t remember you from UW’s place.
No harm, no foul. My trigger finger gets a little itchy as well.
Thank you for your gracious response, Andy.
Boy Howdy, Bill Clinton may win the election for Obama by his self.
I’m afraid so. I bet the majority of those who were of age in the 90′s were secretly hoping, G-d, if only we were voting for Bill.
Really? Explain JWS, pls. It seemed, until the end, WJC was giving an intentionally unenthusiastic speech. It got mush better at the end, but most of the speech was blah.
NES: He’s the best explainer of why Obama should get another term. It’s all crap of course but he packages it well. Very well.
Struck by Bill’s insistence on going into detail no matter what the crowd wanted. Excellent speech, and he treated us like adults.
I mean, we aren’t. Be he decided he’d treat us that way anyway.
Until I understand why he repealed Glass Steagall, his light will be slightly dimmed for me. But it’s still pretty darned bright.
“Struck by Bill’s insistence on going into detail no matter what the crowd wanted. Excellent speech, and he treated us like adults.”
Spot on!
He didn’t repeal it. The Republicans did & he signed it because they had a veto-proof majority. He had no choice and was not in favor of repealling it.
Sally’s right but it bears mentioning that repealing Glass Steagall didn’t matter all that much anyway. By 1999 the most important parts of Glass Steagall were virtually moot, for instance securities firms and commercial banks were already legally in cahoots with securities schemes, because bit by bit elements of Glass Steagall kept being waived by Fed regulators.
I’m with Jay on this. We enjoyed a period of great prosperity while Clinton was President but it was more tulip mania than brilliant economic policy.
“ I mean, we aren’t.( adults) Be he decided he’d treat us that way anyway.
One of Bill’s secrets…by the end of one of his speeches , one would be more adult
than they were at the start and you felt good about that.
Forcing Congress to override your veto is an option.
‘Tulip mania’ captures that boom perfectly.
“The Republicans did & he signed it because they had a veto-proof majority.”
My suspicion, Sally, is that he signed it for damage control to his legacy.
Exactly, Tamerlane. Forcing Congress to override your veto.
All right. Clinton in top form and he gave exactly the speech I thought he would. Benefits him, benefits Obama, and benefits Hillary. Nicely done.
Tell me where to send the 10 dollar wager, Zal. You won!
Send it to John. And I’ll match it because you’re (and he’s) such a good sport.
Deal! John shall be the beneficiary. Solomon couldn’t have crafted a better denouement. Cheers.
I’m all in the old Dem spirit tonight so now I have to give ten bucks to the site, too.
Bastards!
I bet the jobs numbers this friday tick down. Watch.
Also, Like it or not, if Bill Clinton campaigns like he spoke tonight for Obama, Obama wins. also, skinny or not, the vegan thing may ensure he survives till 2016.
Agreed, John. Bill could give O his second term with performances like this one tonight.
If people were voting tomorrow, Bill’s speech might make a difference. But the election is two months away. That’s a long time. By then, voters will remember that Bill made a good speech, but that’s about it. They’ll have heard other speeched by then, as well as debates, ads, etc.
Of course they’re going tick down. Team Obama silenced Cassandra when Holder sued Gallup a few weeks ago, and now there’s no one to say jack when the thumb goes full bore on the scale.
I just watched a recording of Michelle’s speech from yesterday. Speaking objectively, and judging it just on technical points, she hit it waaaay out of the ballpark.
Yes she certainly did. And NOBODY invents their backstory better than this couple.
Mr. Castro’s is kaput in Texas beyond mayor of San Antonio.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/09/05/mother-dem-convention-star-castro-called-alamo-defenders-drunks-crooks/
Both Mexican settlers and white American settlers to Texas revolted against Mexico. La Raza is a latino Stormfront.
And having been in Texas many times its worth saying that dissing on the Alamo is like crapping on apple pie. He’d have to explain his mom’s comment big time in a state wide race.
Here’s the deal with Bubba’s speech: It went on too long. I bet the audience exited – esp on the east coast.
Yeah.. I thought Clinton’s speech was a little long, but great speech… Too bad it was for Barry. I found a lot of the notes similar to the speech he gave for Kerry in 2004, but one can’t say that the Clintons didn’t do enough for the Obamas.
Is Clinton going to stump for Obama after this speech?
I thought Barry coming out for a hug at the end was a bit much though.
Here’s the deal with Bubba’s speech: It went on too long. I bet the audience exited – esp on the east coast.
There was also this little thing called NFL season opener starring 2 of America’s favorite teams, the Dallas Cowboys v New York Giants. The game was 24-17 Dallas and they were still playing after WJC finished his speech.
Dag nab it – I put the quote/unquote markup language around John’s words but they didn’t show up. What do I need to use to quote – block then /block??
Nora O’Donnell said it was Bill’s longest — 48 mins. Longer than his ’88 one.
DECODER RING SAYS:
Watch Clinton hug O at the end of his speech. Which candidate projects sincerity and which candidate seems deeply uncomfortable by displays of sincerity?
Of course I didn’t meant to call both of them ‘candidates’.
Hahaha!
But Fluke is harsh, prissy…and annoying. She’s a law student at great school. This is hardly the stuff of victimhood
Oh my, if I had a dollar for everytime somebody said that about Hillary Clinton, I’d be as rich as Rockefeller.
John, you might want to examine your feelings about intelligent women who speak up for themselves.
How dare Fluke object to being called a slut and asked to provide porn?
Does she have the nerve to see herself as an actual person with agency and dignity?
What a bluestocking.
Burn her.
Wow – so much wrong with this comment. So, now Fluke is being compared to HRC – oh and the bluestockings? And, if anyone calls Fluke out for her obvious annoying personality traits, then they hate intelligent women? Hmmm – sounds exactly like everyone who says you can’t call out Obama for what he is because that’s racist.
Eff off.
BTW: HRC has spent a lifetime earning respect in monumental roles of public service. Fluke’s claim to fame is that she wants to violate others’ religious freedom so that she – a person paying for a $50K a year law school who will have earning power of six figures immediately after she graduates – can get free birth control to have unprotected (no condom means unprotected in my book) sex.
I think all the Fluke supporters are as obnoxious as Limbaugh. In their own way, they all are trying to force their own radical beliefs on an unwilling center of the public. At least, Limbaugh isn’t demanding we pay for his sex habits though.
You took ‘harsh prissy and annoying’ to ‘burn her’. That’s what you just did. It is not helpful and doesn’t make people want to listen to you.
“Eff off”? Wow. Nice. Someone has a different opinion than you, so you tell her/him to Eff off? And you know Fluke’ll make 6 figures immediately after graduating because…???
I’ve defended your positions quite a few times here over the past, like on racial issues, run, but I won’t be doing that in the future.
“I think all the Fluke supporters are as obnoxious as Limbaugh. In their own way, they all are trying to force their own radical beliefs on an unwilling center of the public. At least, Limbaugh isn’t demanding we pay for his sex habits though”.
What a truly shitty thing to say.
Also, I highly doubt if she would give a shit about free birth control if she was making 6 figures a year. She was speaking on behalf of women in general. btw, having my hard earned tax $ going to pay for phony republican wars to make the president & vice presidents war buddies rich violates my religious beliefs. Your defense of Limbag, lying scumbag who is an enemy of any thinking woman and a flaming hypocrite in every way:
” At least, Limbaugh isn’t demanding we pay for his sex habits though.” is really sick.
1) I’ll say Eff Off when I want to say it. And, when someone plays the sex card – and demeans true sexism – just as when someone plays the race card over Obama to try to shame someone out of criticizing a person by calling them a woman hater or racist, I’ll damn well tell them to Eff Off. Thats the only response that kind of pandering deserves.
2) You are so blinded by this issue that you can’t tell the difference between “defending” Limbaugh and equating 2 parties’ equally obnoxious behavior. And, Fluke and her supporters have been annoyingly, irritatingly, gratingly obnoxious.
3) Let me introduce you to the efinition of “earning power.” It means what Fluke will be ABLE to make not what she definitely WILL make. If she chooses not to make 6 figures, that will be her choice and a luxury that well off people have.
4) As much as you want to spin this, Fluke was very selfishly arguing for her own right for free birth control. After all, she wasn’t out agitating for the Jesuits to provide coverage for birth control for the homeless women who live in a shelter literally right next door to georgetown law center. No, she wanted it for herself, her fellow well-off students and staff at georgetown, all of whom – even janitorial staff – make more than enough to pay for condoms.
5) No one ever asked you to defend me, nor have I ever noticed if you did. I hate when people in here go all – “Hey, better talk right, or I won’t “defend” you anymore.” I don’t care about that. Either defend a point or not as you decide, but it’s ridiculous to keep some kind of scoreboard whereby you decide whether to “defend” another commenter or not because they adhere to your own code.
If you want to tell another poster to eff off over a simple disagreement, that’s your choice, and you can live with the feedback and respect or lack thereof, you get. I think its goes way beyond whatever there is of bad blog manners and hate to see this place turn into a sewer becuz the 2 or 3 liberals that are left here say something you don’t like. Sweet Sue was not responding to you, or insulting you in any way. People here (like John & I upthread) disagree all the time without the FU. Also, your response about what Fluke can or will make is ridiculous, and obviously pulled out of your ass. I don’t need you to introduce me to any efininitions, thanks anyway. There are myriads of lawyers out of work, and many that are poor or broke; going to Law School doesn’t guarantee a fat paycheck. Lastly, you obviously don’t know squat about what Sandra Fluke went to address congress about. Why don’t you look it up before you spout off the rethuglican anti-woman talking points about this case.
Oh – don’t lecture me about tone in here. Many’s the time people have used foul language to each other in here (and not with the euphamism I used) over much less than playing the sexism card which deserves an Eff Off. Or, lecture all you want – don’t care, but I will respond. (Nice touch, trying to drag JWS in as a security blanket though).
And, I did read that crapola on a stick that Fluke considered testimony. It was all me, me, me because the only upshot of that testimony was to get the Jesuits – who she clearly can’t stand – to pay for her and her colleagues birth control. She wasn’t all for poor mothers and the destitute. It was for people who are EMPLOYED by Catholics to get free birth control. You can taste her glee at forcing those Catholics to pay for something they are morally opposed to
Of course, today’s “liberals” believe there is no higher calling than forcing people to do things they think are morally right whether the people they are bending to their will believe in it/are morally opposed. You can call it liberal if you want; I call it tottalitarian. And, that puts you and Fluke right up there with Limbaugh – enjoy the view.
BTW: Since you do seem to need edification about certain law students’ earning power, as of last year, 92% of georgetown law center grads were employed ON graduation. Their median private sector STARTING salary was $160,000. That’s 160 with 3 zero’s after it per year. Plenty to pay for condoms for herself and, hey – even pay for a bunch to distribute to those who can’t pay for them. Unless she is really supremely unhireable for some personality or temperament flaws . . . . .
Republican talking points. Fluke has been actively working for women’s rights all of her young adult life.
Wow – that’s what you are reduced to? “Republican talking points.” Well, that’s got me beaten. I guess georgetown’s own stats on their graduates’ earning power is a republican talking point too. (You really didn’t think I knew exactly what the #s were, did you?) And, that whole freedom of religion thing – just something the Republicans have persuaded Americans is in the constitution through the use of their crafty talking points. And, of course my argument that it is some gall to compare the long, illustrious career and life of HRC to Fluke’s who comes off as a spoiled brat no matter how many volunteer hours she’s spent (just like a few entitled Peace Corps volunteers I’ve known) came straight from Limbaugh, that known HRC defender.
Oooh- yoiu really nailed it with that pithy comeback, Socal.
imo Sweet Sue was comparing the treatment of women rather than the two women themselves. One should not have to spend a life time of being HRC to ” earn” decent treatment… How dare Sweet Sue expect that!
Eff off.
lol but thanks for the laugh
I respect John greatly for not trying to justify his dislike of Fluke, but admitting it’s
based on on his own likes and dislikes.
Yeah – she was comparing John’s criticism of her as someeone wallowing in victimhood – which is supremely annoying to the groups of people who have judged HRC by dismissing her entire body of accomplshments. Sure – that’s the exact same thing.
Being a woman doesn’t absolve you of criticism if you thrust your opinions into the national sphere which is exactly what Sue was tryng to do for her
Freedom of religion? I have no problem with freedom of religion, but I hate that churches get to run their for profit businesses by special rules. I think they should have the same responsibilities and taxes as every other business.
Limbaugh didn’t just call her a slut. He also lamented the he/we had to pay for her to have sex. He did not lament that he/we were (by default) paying for her stud boyfriend to have sex. Not that I have any use for it at all, but my pretty decent health plan covers Viagra but not birth contol pills if you’re using them for birth control. It does cover them if you’re using them to regulate menses or fix acne. Go figure.
Whatever you think of Sandra Fluke is irrelevant; she speaks for the majority of women, even Republican women. Since when does someone’s earning power have anything to do with what their health care plan should cover?
I wish women would stop fucking men until all of them realize that unfettered access to birth control is not just a women’s issue.
Also, I wouldn’t call what Lush Rumball did to her “criticism” either. Lets see he raved on and on about how she was a “slut” a “prostitute” “wanted ‘us’ or ‘me’ to pay for her having sex–and said that since she wanted other people to pay for her having sex, she should make a sex tape for them (meaning rush and his cohorts)”.
Yeah, that’s real legitimate “criticism”.
A) The Jesuits universities and Catholic hospitals are not run as for-profit institutions. Even if they were, their 1st Amendment rights cannot be run roughshod over without equally compelling constitutional weighing for the opposing issue.
B) Someone’s earning power absolutely factors into whether their healthcare plan should cover birth control when they choose to attend a school or work for an organization whose religion is morally opposed to birth control. I absolutely do not believe that Fluke speaks for the majority of women, and certainly not the majority of Republican women when she tries to influence public policy to force a religion to do something they are morally opposed to. To me – and a lot of women who care about the first amendment, this is about forcing your beliefs on people who have a different religious/moral belief from you and forcing them to subsidize your behavior that is against their religion.
C) Socal – as you well know, I never said that Limbaugh’s comments on Fluke were “criticisms.” I was talking about John’s criticisms of Fluke and Sue’s challenging him as a result to “examine his feelings about intelligent women” which was an inflammatory thing to say and definitely played the gender card. I think Fluke’s “Republicans have declared war on my vagina and/or sex habits” is just as much demagoguing as Limbaugh’s “she wants us to pay for her having sex; doesn’t that make her a prostitute.” I’m sick of both extremes.
Also, glad Socal that you have “no problem with freedom of religion” it being part of the very first amendment in the Bill of Rights. But, I guess you only have “no problem” with that right for people who don’t earn anything for a living?
My adorable dad-in-law, a man who doesn’t suffer fools or rat fuckers, sent me this today and it seems an appropriate conclusion to your vicious and apparently non-stop hate spewing. Its just one tiny drop in the bucket of course of the Catholic Churchs hypocrisy in business:
“The 2,500 erotic books in their online catalogue, including those from Blue Panther Books, an erotic book publisher owned by Weltbild, are only one example. Their titles include: “Anwaltshure” (Lawyer’s Whore), “Vögelbar” (F—kable) and “Schlampen-Internat” (Sluts’ Boarding School).
The Church also owns a 50% share in publishing company Droemer Knaur which produces pornographic books, and so indirectly is also a publisher of pornographic material, titles including “Nimm mich hier und nimm mich jetzt!” (Take Me Here, Take Me
Now!), and “Sag Luder zu mir!” (Call Me Slut!).”
http://www.worldcrunch.com/catholic-church-makes-fortune-german-porn-business/culture-society/catholic-church-makes-a-fortune-in-the-german-porn-
business/c3s3995/#.UEj88Y7Tm0I
Oh yeah, these are people who I want to be able to make all the money they want here in our country, with no financial or moral or ethical responsibility to the society that gives them their freedom and provides them with countless free services. Yeah, the Catholic Church…oppressing women & children for 1700 years!
http://www.worldcrunch.com/catholic-church-makes-fortune-german-porn-business/culture-society/catholic-church-makes-a-fortune-in-the-german-porn-business/c3s3995/#.UEj88Y7Tm0I
Very interesting link to the Catholic Church and investments in porn, socal. No question that that makes them hypocritical. Of course hypocrisy and organized religion are perennial bedfellows.
I know the dynamic you’re referring to, Sweet Sue. Any strong woman DOES cause some men to spaz out. I’m not one of them. This one person rubs me the wrong way and I find the entire elevation of her wrong headed and probably pre planned with the hope that someone like Rush would lose it. He dutifully complied by being himself. She’s been elevated to “spokeswoman” for no particular reason other than a blowhard called her an ugly name and it served Obama to exploit it. She’s getting her 15 minutes and I do not blame her for that.
Presentationally neither Clinton or Warren or Feinstein or S. Martinez or Merkel or any number of other smart, powerful women bug me or bother me. My take is less about her gender than about her lack of ballast/gravitas. I don’t know why she’s been knighted as any sort of leader on anything.
Fluke has every right to her opinion. This doesn’t mean I must think she’s a good or worthy messenger.
Socal – don’t even know where to start with your dad-in-law’s trolling for Catholic-owned porn other than it must have been fun, but have absolutely no idea whatsoever what point you are trying to make. It seems the facts I have at my disposal undercutting your deep observations like “you’re just repeating Republican talking points” or “the school Fluke belongs to is a for-profit institution” is making your head figuratively spin. But, how does an erotic book publishing company supposedly owned by the Catholic church have anything to do with the fact that the organizations we are all talking about – Jesuit Universities, Catholic-owned hospitals, etc. are non-profit organizations? Maybe need to just take a deep breath.
Plus, since I KNOW you weren’t calling me a rat-fucker (actually never understood that term; i can see how you can physically be a mother-fucker, but a rat one??) when you mentioned your dad-in-law, given your high-minded notions of what is acceptable discourse in this forum, I of course won’t call you out as a hypocrite on that . . . .
I didnt watch the speech. Couldn’t. I still can’t believe that Bill wanted so much to be considered a “kingmaker” that he went before his fellow citizens to support a person he truly believes is one of the worst Presidents we’ve had. He knows that 4 more years of Obama will be a disaster; he even knows it will likely doom HRC’s chances to run in case she was inclined. He still couildn’t resist the temptation to be seen to be O’s savior and the ability to stick in O’s face that O now needs to run on Clintons’ record that O repudiated so viciously in 2008. As much as I have respected Bill’s intellect and acumen and like him as a person, I well recognize that his ego and his appetite to be loved even by those who hate him are his fatal flaws. And, I will never forgive him if Obama wins.
I’m with you Run. Bill’s ego is as big as O’s. I love Hillary and wanted to see her win in 2008. For me Billl is responsible for the repeal of Glass-Steagall, NAFTA, WTO (lots of off-shoring because of it) and his derivatives crap bill he signed. To name just a few. I am no longer a Bill fan.
Agreed Run. I foolishly thought he’d be able to toss some veiled barbs O’s way. There were a few, but they were weak and not worth it. At the end of the day, he put his arm around O when he didn’t have to.
He had to. After 2008 Bill and Hillary made a deal with the devil. They didn’t have to, they chose to, and that choice made them much wealthier and kept them at the pinnacle of the U.S. A-list and popularity contest. Maybe that’s important. Even if it is, it requires certain atrocities to maintain.
No doubt they’ve justified it with all kinds of it’s best for humanity reasons, and for all we know history will validate that. I, myself, can’t completely stop believing in them. But from my seat in the bleachers the whole thing looks very smarmy at this point in the story.
Well Facebook and blog comments are lighting up with glowing praise of Clinton’s “fact based” speech and renewed support for Obama. Opposition to this narrative will not be tolerated.
If Clinton travels the next two months with a full throttle campaign schedule for Obama, and maintains the commitment to deceit he exhibited last night, that’s it folks. Insects like Internet trolls and behemoth bullies like Wall Street and Corporate Cash are no match for Bubba.
I admit, if I believed what Clinton said last night, I’d vote for Obama too.
Zal,
I sure hope Clinton doesn’t “travels the next two months with a full throttle campaign schedule for zero.” Time will tell.
Also, liked your explanation above about Glass-Steagall being removed piecemeal before it was repealed. I still think Bill should have vetoed it. Blech I’m getting sick of all politicians.
Jill Stein is going to be visiting my town on Sunday. I’m going to try to see her.
I’ve been ‘hiding’ friends posts like crazy for the past two weeks. I should probably stay off Facebook completely for the next six months.
WJC’s comments about the O campaign playing the Race card on him, and his opinion that they planned it all along, passed the smell test a long time ago.
This deeply inclusive man should have left it at that. I was disappointed last night. The saving grace to it all was knowing that at least half the audience wishes he were still President.
As for Sandra Fluke, attending a prestigious Jesuit school, and expecting that institution to abandon it’s principles on her behalf, is just mind blowing in its’ narcissism.
Join.
At least, Limbaugh isn’t demanding we pay for his sex habits though
Well, “we” paid for his suitcases full of Viagra”, if by we, you mean insurance companies.
Limbaugh is self-insured. He often talks about it.
I personally do not believe that insurance companies should pay for Viagra if they don’t pay for birth control, so the Catholic-paid insurance should eliminate both (even though Viagra supports behavior in line with their religion while birth control doesn’t), but get your facts straight Sue.
I think the whole Sandra Fluke thing started because she had a friend with.PCOS who was using birth control pills to treat it, maybe that friend is Fluke herself.. who knows… And the issue was that Jesuit school said it was being used as contraception do not being covered. As far as I can tell it was never about condoms or the war on women.
But OFA was able to blow it up into that type if issue and thus far Fluke has been happy to go along as a poster child for it…to Jays point, we can be heroes…just for one day… So if Fluke wants to milk her 15 minutes of fame good for her… Het speech was full of self aggrandizement IMO… And overall its a distraction and detracts from her original argument, which was a valid one but that ship has sailed.
After thinking about Clinton’s speech, I still think it was a great speech although like I said a lot of the elements about voting between two world views was similar to the speech he gave for Kerry… What strikes me is that Obama isn’t capable of go ing this type of speech, and if anyone NEEDS to give this type of speech its Obama… Having Clinton onstage essentially vouching for his first term makes Obama look like he needs Clinton defending him, rather than being a leader in his own right.
Anehe hug at the end seemed shallow and desperate on Obama’s behalf.
I forgot how LONG Clinton could talk. But always appreciate how willing Clinton was to work both sides of the aisle and call the Republicans on their BS when it interfered with governing… Again, I just don’t see Obama being able to give this kind of speech.
Tonight Im most curious on what Biden will say, but I expect some overwrought gauzy feel good speech from Obama with lots of shots of audience members with eyes skyward or heads bowed and the feel-good treatment, bit I don’t think lofty oratory is going to cut it. As much ashe RNC and DNC are just peo rallies for each respective side, Obama has to say something to get undecideds tonight, not puff up his base.
Sorry for typos I’m typing on phone.
I hope you get the jist.
I hope you FEEL it
I’m very pro college-women-having-lots-of-sex, but Sandra Fluke is a phony. She can head back to Suffragette City for all I care.
Of course Fluke is a phony, that goes without saying.
Im just saying where this thing blew up from didnt seem to have anything to do with college women having lots of sex, but specifically college women using birth control pills to deal with polycistic ovary syndrome, and being denied insurance coverage for those pills.. based on my admittedly limited understanding of where this started.
The fact that Fluke willingly became part of the whole circus around this and continues to milk her 15 minutes of fame for all its worth is proof of her phoniness IMO, and its just a huge distraction to the overall issues at hand. She’s just there to shuck and jive for Obama, and ride her celebrity for as long as she can.
1) I’m always leery of anecdotal evidence involving an unnamed ‘friend’. And really — this friend was denied the pill by G-Town, so she just sat there while a cyst grew? Defies belief;
2) Fluke used the PCOS treatment for her example, but is she saying she’d accept a compromise where G-Town agreea to pay for birth control ONLY when prescribed for non-contraceptive reasons? Of course not, so her example is specious;
3) The figures Fluke quotes for annual cost of birth control are ridiculous. No GF of mine has ever paid that much, and some have gotten it low-cost from programs. Besides, there are about a hundred orgs that hand out free condoms;
4) Birth control is part of healthcare, and if the jevvies want to run a business that provides HC, then they have to provide all of it, not just the parts their religion sanctions. That’s no more a violation of the 1st Amd than is compelling christian scientists to take their kids to the doctor. Specious and fabricated stories like Fluke’s only serve to undermine that basic fact;
5) Universal healthcare would moot this entire discussion.
I’ll just keep repeating this – what damming info. does the O team have on Bill. Remember the hold they had on Edwards and the damage he did to Hillary’s campaign.
You are not alone in thinking that. Team Zero is a nasty group that will stop at nothing to get what they want.
They have nothing on Bill. He has something they need and they offer something he wants.
It’s no complicated or even mysterious. Welcome to the big boy’s club.
A Facebook update from Dan Rather. He’s got Hillary’s back.
“From Dan: There’s saturated news coverage of the political conventions, but scant coverage of rising tensions with China. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is currently on a trip to the area – it’s important, but virtually ignored. China is aggressively expanding claims to territory and influence in the region. The US alliance is increasingly worried – especially Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam and Australia. How the next US president handles this is vital to keeping peace – still keeping friendly relations with China, while at the same time protecting US influence. But you don’t hear anything about this from either presidential nominees or their speakers. They completely ignore it.”
Learn Chinese and don’t be afraid. Chances are they’re not as awful as Obama and RomneyRyan.
Oh my god. I can only believe that Zal is trying to be funny/facetious in his own non-humorous way, so I won’t catalogue the list of horrible, horrible, gruesome things the Chinese government does to it’s own citizens, and the people of Tibet, the toxins they spread throughout the world because of their virtually complete repudiation/ignoring of environmental protections, plus their exporting their mistreatment of their own working class now to African miners and other workers outside of China. I won’t catalogue these because even Zal must be joking with this statement.
The mellifluous delivery of Clinton in defense of Obama cannot conceal nor contain the failure of this President. My neighbor had to sell her car last month to feed her kids and pay for rent. This by no means is an isolated act of desperation and is happening all over USA.
I could give a rats arse about Clinton and the case he made for Obama. The case is closed and not even Bill Clinton can put lipstick on this pig in an attempt to camouflage reality.
Was the God/Jerusalem one amendment or two? Did The Democratic Party just add the Ark of the Covenant to its platform?
It was two separate one’s — the former had to do with education, as in “God-given talents.”
Love the quip.
They should have included a plank saying, “every American deserves better than this God-forsaken economy.”
Re Fluke – how do know if the axelrod and company didn’t go looking for her. She has reportedly been an activist for a number of years. Not the first time, someone wanted to move quickly up the ladder without doing a lot of the grunt work like Hillary.
that should be how do you know
I hated Bill’s deep, 90 degree bow to O when the latter came on stage.
Any speculation about why he did it (assuming it wasn’t just reflexive)?
Situation irony.
Perhaps he was holding back a huge furball? Or perhaps it was to remind us that the creature in the WH has bowed to all?
Amen.
FCS! Can’t we all just Get Abong?!
Oh snap!
What Obama “has” on Bill Clinton:
The simplest answer is – Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State.
HRC’s legacy as SoS is linked to Obama’s first term, like it or not.
Bill Clinton simply has no choice but to play nice with the administration until Hillary Clinton ends her term as SoS in January 2013 (regardless of whether Obama wins or loses in Nov).
I don’t think it’s as Machiavellian as we’d like it to be, because it’d be easier to swallow to think that OFA is somehow holding something over Clinton’s head to make him do their bidding… but I think the simplest and most cynical explanation is that it’s the most politically expedient thing to do for Bill Clinton to benefit both himself and Hillary Clinton.
If Obama wins, Clinton looks good.
If Obama loses, Clinton can shrug his shoulders and say that he and Hil did everything they could to help.
Is there anything left that Clinton was convicted of that Obama could pardon?
I think the only charge that stuck on Clinton if I remember correctly was perjury.
They don’t call him Slick Willie for nothing!
I believe Clinton was just disbarred and I don’t think that is presidential pardonable.
Well he perjured himself again last night.
“Reflexive.” Probably, just that simple.
Dan, a logical deduction all the way around. The Clintons can always be counted on to snatch a victory out of the jaws of defeat.
So, now Chris Matthews loves Bill Clinton, at least if he’s bending over backwards to prop up Obama, or if he’s on Mars. The man is nuts, nuts, nuts.
“I always figured that if Bill Clinton landed on Mars. He would know how to do it with them. He would know how to reproduce. He would know everything. He would just instinctively know how to talk to people. They would be laughing in about five minutes. The Martians.”

OMG! One could say Matthews finally jumped the shark, except that he does that almost every week in election season.
One other thing per a New Yorker article:
Apparently OFA is paying off the remainder of HRC’s campaign debt from 2008 as one of the contitions of Clinton speaking last night. The only thing that surprises me is I thought this was already dealt with, but it doesn’t surprise me that it wasnt.

Well, ask not what Obama can do for you. Ask what you can do for Obama.
That’s kind of his motto, don’t you think?
If true, it puts Bill’s speech in a crass but also more understandable light.
Exactly, O team promised to do that four years ago! Take no promise from the O team . Get what you want UP FRONT before services rendered …otherwise you won’t get it .
I dislike personal attacks on Sandra Fluke and avoid joining in pile-ups on her.
Fluke’s words, however, are entirely another thing. I didn’t like much of her speech yesterday: ‘women as victims’ as a message sticks in my craw. I’m with Kirsten Powers on this point: https://twitter.com/kirstenpowers10
Oops…this is the link I’d meant to post (goes with the Powers on Fluke Comment supra): http://www.therightscoop.com/boom-democrat-kirsten-powers-slams-sandra-fluke-speech-i-find-this-speech-so-offensive-as-a-woman/
Good for Kirsten.
